Calvin’s Hamburger Haven Review

Last time I stopped by Calvin’s Hamburger Haven was over four years ago. That visit wasn’t very memorable. One of the things I remember was how dry of a burger it was. Since then, I’ve had many people send emails and comments encouraging me to make a return and that it has improved. Since we are all about second chances at Wichita By E.B., I made my way back to see if this next try would be better than the last.

I stopped by over lunch and just missed the rush. After I placed my order, literally 10+ people were in line behind me. Either they were really popular or it was people who didn’t want to wait in line for Popeye’s new chicken sandwich down the street.

Like all burger places, I usually stick to a basic burger and avoid ordering anything gimmicky. If the burger ends up being good, I’ll always return to try one of their more creative options. So my order consisted of a double hamburger, fries and a Calvin’s hot dog.

Let’s start off with the hot dog. It had grilled onions, pickle chips and mustard in a soft bun that all meshed very well together. It was a good appetizer so to speak and a nice start to my meal.

The fries were pretty bad. They were unseasoned, dry and just bland. There wasn’t much of a crispiness factor to them but they weren’t overly soft either. If I were ranking fries, these would have been towards the bottom of my list.

As for the burger, it was much better than I remember it being. I wouldn’t order a burger here if you’re concerned about health. It was really greasy which can be good or bad depending on what you’re looking for. I didn’t mind it. The patties were also juicier than I recall them being which was a great improvement. In the bun department, I was a big fan of theirs. It held up well despite all the grease. The only drawback I would say about the burger was the lack of a distinct flavor to them; slightly a little bland. I wasn’t sure if they seasoned the patties on the grill. If they did, I couldn’t tell when tasting it.

It was a decent burger but still wouldn’t make my top ten list. I think I had maybe 5 or 6 fries before tossing the rest out. Big thumbs up on the hot dog but I doubt many people will go here strictly for the hot dog.

Would I go back here? If it was just for the burger probably not. But they have some items that intrigue me like the Hawaiian burger and peanut butter burger so a third return isn’t completely out of the question.

The ladies working there were all very nice so they had that going for them as well.

Here’s their menu:
