This particular feature is nice and easy. It answers a question many people have when they enter a restaurant. What do I order? I’m here with the assist. This was even easier considering it is National Baked Potato Day. For this segment, I stopped by When Pigs Fly Bar-B-Que. They are one of the few BBQ restaurants in northwest Wichita. I hope you enjoy the latest installment in the “Must Try Menu Item” feature.

At When Pigs Fly, they have a section on their menu titled Colossal Spuds. They are basically big baked potatoes loaded as only a BBQ restaurant could.

They have four options available:

  • Loaded Spud which includes butter, sour cream, cheddar, cheese & chives
  • Loaded Spud with Meat which is the loaded spud with your choice of brisket, pork, turkey, hot links or jalapeno cheddar sausage
  • Bacon-Ranch Spud which is a loaded spud topped with crispy bacon and creamy ranch
  • Atomic Spud which is a spud topped with cheddar cheese, hot links and spicy bbq sauce

I gave the loaded spud with pork a try and walked away an extremely happy diner. To start off the potato’s skin is coated with sea salt and butter which was noticeably delicious. Some people believe at love at first sight, I’m more of the love at first bite type of guy. From the exterior aspect alone, it had a nice crispy texture that I wanted more of. Seriously I’d go back and just eat the skin alone. Typing that makes me feel like some deranged serial killer.

Then there was the potato. Part of me feared I was going to be a bit hungry and would have to order a second one but that wasn’t the case. It truly was a colossal spud as the name implied.

There was no shortage of butter, sour cream, cheddar cheese or chives. They were generous with the pork which just topped out the meal and gave it much more substance to fill you up.

Admittedly I haven’t ate man potatoes like this at restaurants but When Pigs Fly has set the bar for me. Any other place I go for a spud will have to measure itself against this one.
