One restaurant that’s been high on my list to review for quite some time has been Poplar Restaurant. The restaurant has been family owned and operated for over 30 years. There are two locations to choose from: one in Andover, KS and another in Howard, KS. For the purpose of this review, we chose Andover. They seem to have quite the following and it definitely showed on my visit when the place was packed.

It was Friday night and our party of eight was seated fairly quickly. I was surprised given the amount of customers in that evening and every table occupied. We luckily arrived before a large table was getting ready to leave. The food gods were on our side. With children and adults at our table, we ordered a hodgepodge of different foods.
- A bunch of Beer battered haddock fish fry
- Meat supreme pizza
- Wings
- Chicken tenders for the kids
- Pepperoni loafer for the kids
Admittedly the food took A LONG TIME. As I mentioned earlier, there wasn’t an empty seat in the house but it’s something to keep in mind if you have plans afterwards.
Food reviews are usually harder when so many people are involved so to condense things up I’ll focus on a few things that were closer to my end of the table.
The beer battered haddock fish fry was nothing short of amazing. Three of us actually ordered this since it was their Friday special of the night. The breading was light and tasty and the fish underneath was so flavorful. It wasn’t too flaky and held its texture well. I try to limit profanity on this blog to very few occasions and this was worthy of “It was just damn good.” Aside from that the fries were nothing spectacular and the coleslaw wasn’t overly sweet or mushy. Our whole focus was on the fish and forks of it were being passed around so everyone could get a bite.
Everybody enjoyed all the food we ordered but the fish fry definitely stole the show. The pizza was good, meaty and filling. We tried the Char-BQ and Hot wings and the Char-BQ were much better. There was a nice smokey flavor to it while the Hot wings tasted like Franks RedHot sauce which was perfectly fine. Kids seemed to enjoy the loafer. It’s essentially a huge pizza roll and what kid doesn’t love pizza rolls?
The menu consisted of lots of diner and bar type food which might bore some people but for what we had, they did it well.
Service was great throughout the night. Our server did an excellent job of refilling drinks and checking up on everybody. Aside from the long time it took to get our ticket and pay, it was an A effort.
We would definitely go again.
Here’s their menu:
Happy Dining,
