Drive Thru Sno Balls at Rockin Rico’s Sno Balls

It was a beautiful weekend and we wanted to get out of the house for some dessert. There’s a mobile vendor called Rockin Rico’s Sno Balls that my brother introduced me to a couple of years ago.

We’ve been to their Derby location multiple times. But since we were out in east Wichita, we swung over to their location at Kellogg and Rock Road where the Mattress Firm is located. They had a drive-thru only system set up which worked like a breeze.

First of all what is a sno ball?

A sno ball is a New Orleans confection made with finely shaved ice and flavored cane sugar syrup. Commonly confused with the snow cone, the ice of a snoball is fine and fluffy; while a snow cone’s ice is coarse, crunchy, and granular. Moreover, in a snow cone the flavored syrup sinks to the bottom of the cup; while in a sno ball the ice absorbs the syrup.

The big difference in the sno ball is the ice. It’s noticeably fluffier than their counterpart and really holds the syrup better. It makes for an easier eat during the hotter months.

At Rockin’ Rico’s, they also have gourmet options that include soft serve ice cream along with other ingredients and toppings to take your sno ball experience to a whole new level. The gourmet options have become our go to.

On our latest visit, we went with the following gourmet flavors:

Root Beer and Strawberry
Mango and Dreamsicle

The gourmet flavors had a sweet drizzle poured over the top that added a nice pop to it. Between the soft serve and the sno ball, it was a very smooth and delicious treat. The consistency of the sno ball held well throughout the evening.

There were times for forgot about the utensils and started putting the cup into my face like a caveman who was unfamiliar with spoon usage. What they advertise, they definitely deliver.

With so many shave ice and snow cone trucks out there, Rockin Rico’s definitely has a product that stands out. It’s easily one of our favorites and a visit we will make regularly during the summer.

Here’s their menu:

Here are the prices for the sno balls:
Mini Rock (8oz.) – $2.00
Rockstar (12 oz.) – $2.50
Superstar (16 oz.) – $3.00
Megastar (20 oz.) – $3.50
King of Rock (32 oz.) – $5.00
