Just Like Mama’s Kitchen Revisited

Last August, a soul food restaurant opened at 9th and Grove. I remember stopping by their soft opening which coincidentally took place during my brother’s birthday. We loved it out there. And with everything going on in the world, I wanted to show some love and support this business again and help spread the word of their delicious food. This isĀ Just Like Mama’s Kitchen revisited.

At the moment, Just Like Mama’s Kitchen only offers drive thru. I stopped by and made my order to go. Keep in mind everything is made fresh so it could take around 15 minutes or so to have your order finished.

We had the 2-pc catfish meal, 3-pc whole wings, and 3-pc fried ribs meal. For our sides we went with the collard greens, mac & cheese and candied yams which weren’t on the menu.

The food smelled so good driving home, I was starting to get dizzy. I contemplated pulling over on the side of the highway to eat everyone’s meals.

I missed out on the fried ribs last time so made sure to try them this go around. There was a saltiness to the fried ribs that really stuck out but aside from that, they were still very meaty and tasty. My brother told me he really enjoyed them last time and I could finally see why he said that. They were very good.

Similar to the ribs, the catfish was slightly on the salty side. There was a light thin breading with some seasoning on it that was fried to perfection.

The three-piece wings were also a very filling meal. What I loved most about the wings was it wasn’t overly fried. I hate it when I get whole wings and they are hard to eat. The breading and meat came off of the bones with ease. And the meat….. wow, juicy and tender even after the long drive home.

Where they hit some more home runs were the sides. I loved them all. From the candied yams to the mac & cheese to the collard greens, they were all amazing. I could easily go back and just eat sides there especially the collard greens; best in town hands down.

It’s hard to gauge service in a drive-thru, but the lady I spoke with was very delightful and made some suggestions to me that were worthwhile like the candied yams.

Let’s face it, 9th and Grove isn’t a place many readers probably travel to often. But if you’re willing to open your minds and even your appetite, Just Like Mama’s Kitchen is such a worthwhile visit. With all the hate going on in the world, why not be an advocate for change? I bet this isn’t an area 90% of you have been to. Change the areas you support, branch out, give them a try and spread the word. They have some wonderful comfort food that leaves a lasting impression.

Here’s the menu:

Happy Dining,
