Our breakfast travels around Wichita continued on as I took a couple of the kids with me over to Egg Crate Cafe. It’s been many years since my last visit to the west side breakfast restaurant. We were ready for a refresher.

To begin our day, we ordered some breakfast staples. The kids went with scrambled eggs, bacon, and pancakes. I went with one of their poached eggs on a biscuit with hollandaise sauce special.
Well to kick things off, the eggs were a little on the cold side and “hard” by scrambled eggs standards. The pancake was huge but also similar to the eggs that it wasn’t all that warm. It was decent, not all that fluffy and rather basic. At least the bacon was cooked right.
To start, our hash browns were very mushy. Parts of it had a crispy golden texture but that was few and far between. The eggs were alright and the hollandaise sauce was missing something. I’m not sure but I’ve had much better around town.
When we go on these little family breakfast outings, we always keep our expectations fairly low. Our orders are always simple and most of the time, the restaurants we visit do a great job.
Unfortunately not all breakfasts are created equal. We wanted to like Egg Crate Cafe but just didn’t. Our meals were missing that warm freshness which kind of made sense as it took a while for our order to come out.
On top of that, our server didn’t seem to be having a good day and it kind of reflected on the service. To say it was a disappointing visit would be an understatement.
Happy Dining,
Eddy

That’s too bad, my last couple of visits were not that great either. The most recent was a month or so ago and it took FOREVER to get our food! They were concentrating on getting the “to go” orders out the door first. The sit down customers had to wait, and wait, and wait. Yes the manager(?) kept going around and apologizing for the delays – but in my mind you should take care of the folks who made an effort to come in person. Tell the ones calling in their orders that you need to suspend taking phone orders during your morning rush. Do one or the other – but do not attempt both if you don’t have the staff or grill space to accommodate!
I agree with you something that is basic as breakfast should not be a problem for any restaurant. Sad but I too think that the Egg Crate sucked in making a basic breakfast
I will not ever return, they just don’t care
