When it comes to “Best Hole in the Walls”, “Cheap Eats”, or “Fried Rice in Town”, you’ll usually hear about Fried Rice. They are a tiny little restaurant that sits in a strip center just south of Pawnee on Glendale.

Fried Rice is your typical cash only, no seating, decide what you want quick and get the hell out type of establishment. Not because it’s dangerous but because they don’t do much small talk. Many times a line of customers will form, and they are more focused on getting people their food and out the door. They are definitely friendly but if they had to choose between talking to you about the weather or getting the next customer their fried, they will choose the latter.
The menu at Fried Rice is as simple as you can get. It’s also worth noting that prices have increased 50 cents over time. The most popular order there is the Daily Special which is $4.50 and gets you a 16 oz. container of either chicken or pork fried rice, 2 egg rolls and one drink. You can pay an additional 50 cents and get shrimp fried rice.
If you aren’t feeling egg rolls or a drink, you can pay a dollar less and get the rice only.
Starting off with the pop, they keep it classy only serving Big K brand. If you are digging water, then Kroger brand bottled water is an option.
Every time I stop by, I get the pork. It’s my favorite of the three options. For $4.50, it does a great job of filling me up over lunch. The fried rice was packed with plenty of pork, and wasn’t as greasy as it has been in the past. Just a simple dish that was convenient and affordable.
I don’t know why I get the egg rolls as I’m not a fan of Chinese-style egg rolls. Yet, I did and asked myself the same question after. I could have saved myself a dollar but I had to get my Big K pop. (Yes, common sense does tell me I could probably get a twelve pack of Big K pop for a couple of bucks but who listens to common sense?). And the craziest part of it? I don’t even drink pop! But every time I get Fried Rice, I do. And this past paragraph solidifies the fact that I am crazy.
When it comes to meals under $5, Fried Rice in south Wichita is one of the best deals in town.
