Bomber Burger Revisited

One of the most polarizing burger restaurants is often in the discussion of the best burger, best hole-in-the-wall, and best way to get people riled up about food. It’s Bomber Burger, home of the three-quarter pound burger patties and where you leave your sensitivities at the door.

If you’ve never been to Bomber Burger, you can’t miss it once you head south on Clifton off of 47th street. The 800-square-foot location offers seating for roughly 20 people. There are four tables and a handful of seats at the bar. It’s also a place you want to set some time aside and plan for a longer lunch.

My buddies and I stopped by over the past week. Of the four of us, I wanted to introduce two of them to Bomber Burger. Having lived in Wichita for all of their lives, they’ve never been. As their friend, I felt like I owed it to them to introduce them to one of Wichita’s best burgers.

We all ordered different burgers on our visit:

  • Roethlisbrger – Double cheeseburger with grilled onions, jalapeño, mayo, mustard and pickle.
  • Gumby – Single Cheeseburger with grilled onions, jalapeño, mayo, mustard and pickle.
  • Double Bacon Cheeseburger
  • Regular Cheeseburger

Here are some of the pics we had from lunch.

You’ll notice the absence of fries; that was because their fryer was down that afternoon. Fortunately their burgers are so thick, you often don’t have room for any more food.

Since the patties are literally 3/4 lb patties, they do take a while to cook. Let me tell you, it’s worth the wait. My burger was a monstrosity that was cooked to perfection; it was juicy with the right level of grease, held together by a bun that is working overtime to keep it all intact.

My personal preference for burgers is thick and juicy versus the flattened patty style of burgers. Bomber Burger meets every expectation I have of a burger.

And then there’s the elephant in the room that some people cannot stand. The owner can be brash with a vulgar sense of humor. It was something that didn’t bother a single one of us. He was actually relatively tame the afternoon on our visit which made me wonder if he was starting to grow soft.

I’ve said it before but I might as well say it again. Bomber Burger is not for the easily offended. Many people who walk into Bomber Burger will often talk about the owner and his brash sense of humor. He can be rude, abrasive, profane, politically incorrect and brutally honest. But he really doesn’t care and you can either accept him for who he is or not. I don’t know him personally, but he seems to do it all in good fun. I don’t ever take it personally and like the back and forth. For some, it may be a turn off but for me, it’s part of the shtick that gives Bomber Burger some personality.

Bomber Burger strays away from the corporate feel, everything is all flowers and sunshine and nonstop compliments. It’s for the blue collar, down to earth, and “don’t give a f*** about anything besides grabbing a good burger” people. If you are extremely sensitive, need professionalism at all times and rely on a politically correct world, I recommend you go elsewhere.

For me, I’ve been countless times and have always enjoyed every visit.

Happy Dining,
Eddy
