A new bar has taken over the former Annex Lounge space on east Harry. In paying homage to the once popular bar, it’s called An-Ex Bar N Grill. They recently opened in the past couple weeks, so we stopped by real quick to get an idea of what to expect.

While I didn’t get any pictures of the interior, the layout is similar to the Annex Lounge and even the short-lived Foxhole Lounge. There’s a narrow row of bench seating as you walk in to your right. To your left is another room with additional tables, pool tables, TV’s and dartboards.
The bar had a limited menu on our visit. There were still some items unavailable from the menu, so we ordered their burger, chicken sandwich and the $1 hot dog special with fries.
Before that, we started off with fried pickles as an appetizer. They were awesome; lightly breaded so not to take away from the pickle. They tasted very fresh and made for an excellent start to our lunch.
The rest of our lunch unfortunately was a bit hit-and-miss. From the sounds of things, they were still working through the kinks and that seemed to include the kitchen. The chicken sandwich and burger was on the dry side. A big plus was the serving size. It was a tremendous amount of food at an affordable price. With being new, perhaps a little more time in the kitchen will lead to improvements there.
The hot dogs were fairly simple and nothing too special. My suggestion would have been to include diced up onions instead of larger cut up piece but that’s all preference. The fries, however, were thick with a nice level of grease coating them. They were great and even better dipped in ketchup.
We got the impression that they were all trying really hard. They came out multiple times to check on us, apologize for any errors, and provide good service.
I’m a big believer in people over food, meaning I’d take great service over great food if only one of those options was available. Great service is something some people have a knack for; great food can be taught and easily improved on. That’s where we saw An-Ex Bar N Grill.
An-Ex Bar N Grill did a great job on their fried foods. The other items had room for improvement but being relatively new, that’s something I think can be worked on. But hey, if you’re just looking for a place to grab a drink, this is a great choice!
The staff there showed plenty of signs they want the new bar to succeed and I believe that could happen. They have a foundation to build on and can grow from there. We will be back for a revisited review in the future, and next time cold beers will be included.
