I have lots of friends and family that work in nearly all the various hospitals around the Wichita area. With that, I’ve eaten my fair share of hospital cafeteria food. There’s one cafeteria I wanted to shine some light on. Let’s talk Rock Cafe inside the Rock Regional Hospital in Derby, KS. Their staff has been doing it right and they deserve some pub.
3251 N Rock Rd
Derby, KS 67037
Monday – Friday: 6:45am – 9:15am; 11am – 2pm
Ever since the pandemic, Rock Cafe has not been allowing visitors inside. So unless you’re a patient, employee or have any other reason to be at the hospital, getting food from the cafe may be tough. I have some family that work there so was able to get some via curbside carryout courtesy of my brother.
The cafe has different specials throughout the week. There’s hibachi on Fridays with a really good selection of vegetables, four different sauces, and three protein selections. It’s no BD’s Mongolian Grill or HuHot in terms of selection, but it’s enough given the space they have. Fortunately, the food is good, affordable and filling especially for those wanting a quick lunch.
If you’re a Fuddruckers fan, they’re grill is filled with a selection of their food including burgers, sandwiches, and quesadillas.
Another favorite is a baked potato bar which runs four dollars and change.
Probably the most popular item at the cafe that sells out is their BBQ day which takes place every other Wednesday.
They offer a pulled pork sandwich with cole slaw on top which is probably one of the best cafeteria dishes you’ll probably come across in a hospital. They even have brisket which was quite the surprise; delicious, flavorful and tender.
When it comes to cafeteria food at hospitals, most people probably have low expectations. I remember the last time I had hospital food was when my daughter was born at Wesley and it wasn’t exactly 2 or 3 star cuisines. First time I had Rock Cafe food, I was thoroughly impressed and will certainly go back to try some other dishes once they open up to the public. Rock Regional Hospital employees are definitely eating better than many of the other medical employees in town.
