Po Boy Pizza Revisited

It’s been a few years since I last stopped by Po Boy Pizza. The restaurant which is known for their pizza rolls has been a staple of Wichita for thirty years. It’s been high on my list of places to revisit so we swung by recently to get our fill of pizza rolls.

On our visit, we ordered a supreme pizza roll and a pepperoni pizza roll. If you’ve never heard of their pizza rolls, it’s essentially a folded pizza. It took maybe 10-15 minutes for our order to be completed and we were on our way.

There was an amazing aroma to the pizza rolls; the smell of freshly baked bread filled my car. When I arrived home, I have to admit that the pizza rolls looked much different from what I remember or similar to the pictures of old. There didn’t appear to be much inside the rolls. It was more like flatbread at first glance.

After cutting them in half, my suspicions were confirmed. The pepperoni pizza roll had the thickness of bread flattened with one slice of pepperoni. If there was cheese inside, I didn’t taste it. I was saddened after a few bites. It wasn’t like what I remember.

The supreme pizza roll was slightly better. Mushrooms and cheese stood out the most with little amounts of beef and pepperoni.

I hate writing this review because Po Boy Pizza has been such historical piece of the Wichita restaurant scene. But what I received makes me feel like they’ve lost a step over time.

Was it just a really bad off-day for them? I hope so.

Here’s their menu:

Happy Dining,
Eddy

  1. The owner died this year so I think his wife is just running it now with one of there kids. It does not taste like it did back in 94 when I was going to southeast but its ok. I haven’t been in there since he’s passing so I’m not sure what is going on but I am going to try it again in January.
