Las Islas Marias Revisited

Las Islas Marias

I was craving some seafood recently and wanted to revisit a mariscos that opened a couple of years ago. We made our way out to 21st and Amidon to once again review Las Islas Marias.

Our dinner started off with some complimentary chips and salsa. The chunky salsas each packed quite a bit of heat. The chips were alright but definitely were not fresh.

For our entrees we went with fajitas, ceviche and coctel de camaron y pulpo (shrimp and octopus). Most of our order arrived in a timely manner. They forgot our coctel de camaron y pulpo which came out later.

The fajitas similar to the chips would best be described as alright. There was a decent flavor to it, but the meat was tough which made for a lackluster meal. On the bright side the rice and beans were tasty.

I ordered ceviche mixto which came with shrimp and fish. While I enjoyed the shrimp and loved its acidity, the fish was VERY fishy. It was probably the fishiest tasting fish I’ve had in quite some time. It was very pungent and hard to overlook at times. I quit eating it a quarter of the way through.

The best part of the meal for me though was the coctel de camaron y pulpo. This picture doesn’t do it justice but it was really filling. There was so many shrimp and octopus thrown into the glass.

I was reading through my original review of Las Islas Marias and I commented that the service would need to improve. We experienced similar issues on our visit. There was a general slowness to the evening and the restaurant appeared understaffed again. It didn’t help matters much for the night that most of the food felt underwhelming especially compared to when they first opened.

Eating at mariscos isn’t cheap with the price of seafood and with many other mariscos in town, I just felt that my money could have been better spent elsewhere; just a lackluster night overall.
