First Look at Slider Shak

The building that has been home to such places as Sweet Willy’s BBQ, Big B’s Beef, Burger Basket, Sonny’s Backyard Grill, Jalapeno Mexican Grill, Fire It Up Pit BBQ and most recently Roselynn’s is now the home of Slider Shak. The restaurant quietly opened last week and we swung by because of two reasons. 1.) I love checking out new restaurants and 2.) They serve one of my favorite things to eat….. sliders.

Slider Shak serves items beyond miniature burgers that have been popularized by places like White Castle and Cozy Inn. They have mini-burgers that are stuffed with meatloaf, taco meat, pulled pork, meatballs, spicy chicken and more.

On our visit, we tried to get a little bit of everything they had available. They were sold out of items like meatloaf, meatballs, chicken nuggets and chili. So, we went with their regular cheeseburgers grilled chicken and taco burgers. We also ordered their regular fries and fully loaded Shak fries with pulled pork.

The kids loved the fries which were done just right offering a slight crisp to them. I think they may have eaten more fries than burgers. The fries came with little containers of ShakCrack Sauce which was like their version of the Freddy’s sauce which was like a tangy mayo.

The fully loaded Shak fries could have used a little more loving. Melting the cheese would have been a good start and the pulled pork was a little on the dry side. Overall, they were quite disappointing.

Fortunately, things picked up from there. The sliders came out and appeared to be slightly bigger than those found by the bigger names on the slider game.

The mini-burgers were very enjoyable for what they were. These little sliders probably wouldn’t win any competitions for best burger in Wichita, but that didn’t prevent any of us from like what we had. The burgers were more on the done side, seasoned-well and came with a toasted matching miniature bun. I was surprised how filling they were. Usually at a place like White Castle, you could order 6 burgers or more but I think 2-4 at Slider Shak would be comparable.

The kids were big fans of the taco burgers which tasted exactly like any taco burger around town just in a smaller size.

To be honest, my expectations were a little low on the grilled chicken slider but was pleasantly surprised. The chicken breast was quite juicy, tender and very flavorful.

If you’re really hungry, you can get the Duke’s Double which is a double patty slider. They accidentally put a couple in our order. I felt obligated to eat them and was double stuffed.

We ordered too many sliders and ended up taking them home for leftovers. I popped them in the microwave the next day for 25 seconds and they were good to go. I enjoyed them just as much the next day as I did on my original visit.

I left happy with what we ordered. The people working that day were still getting in the groove of restaurant operations but were very accommodating and doing everything they could to make sure our experience was great. The prices were also very reasonable. I would definitely go back to try their meatloaf, meatball and chili cheeseburgers.

It’s been a tough go for essentially every restaurant in that building. I hope this one can stick simply because I love sliders and that option is nearly nonexistent in town. They’ll have my support.

Happy Dining,
