Lent is soon coming to an end so I had to make sure to knock out some more fish sandwiches before that day came. The latest stop brought me to Wendy’s for their Crispy Panko Fish.

At $4.29, Wendy’s changed up their fish sandwich for this year. They changed to a wild-caught Alaskan pollock after previously using cod. The newly designed Crispy Panko Fish Sandwich features an Alaskan pollock filet with a crunchy panko breading, served with dill tartar sauce, crinkle-cut pickles, lettuce, and American cheese on a toasted premium bun.

At first glance, the sandwich looked great. The bun was soft and the fish had a nice, fried texture to it. I’m not sure why so many places are adding cheese to fish sandwiches but whatever, I’ll eat these fish sandwiches however they are presented.

The fish sandwich from Wendy’s was probably above average. The panko breading offered a decent crunch but didn’t do much else in terms of flavor. I would have preferred a little more dill tartar sauce and dill pickles in the sandwich to give it more zing. The Alaskan pollock itself wasn’t too greasy and mild in flavor. It had a cleaner taste than some of the other competitors around town. Overall, I’d probably put this in the middle tier of fish sandwiches from the ones I’ve tried.

That would mean Popeye’s and Freddy’s Frozen Custard currently sit above Wendy’s on my list.

Happy Dining,
Eddy

  1. This is totally different than the previous fish sandwich….& not in a good way.
The change of fish is fine, you say there’s a dill tartar sauce…it didn’t taste like dill @ all & the pickles are not the same…I’m not saying it’s bad the fish has good crunch and taste . Overall disappointing.
The previous sandwich had so much flavor I was surprised it was fast food.
