Make way for Mortdecai’s Tavern & Eatery which opened in the former Lizard’s Lounge space at 330 S. Greenwich Road. I have fond memories of Lizard’s Lounge; going there to play poker back in the day or spending Easter evenings with random friends. It was a fun east side meeting spot. I was excited to see the changes once I heard Mortdecai was taking over.

The new owners really spruced up the space. The last time I went to Lizard’s Lounge, it was showing its age and feeling rundown.
While we were at Mortdecai’s Tavern & Eatery, my brother and I decided to grab a bite to eat. We started off with some fried pickles which were definitely on the salty side but a decent start to our lunch.
Most of the menu is your standard bar fare and burgers. With that, we went with their Apple Wood Hickory Smoke burger (blend of Apple Hickory woods, smokey and slightly tangy) and their Bourbon BBQ Burger (a savory blend of tangy spices aggravated by a slathering of Curly’s BBQ sauce). For the first burger, I opted to add some bacon for a dollar. Usually bacon is good on everything but the piece I received was overcooked and very hard.
The 1/3 pound burgers were quite thin. On the bright side they weren’t dry but they lacked Apple Hickory woods taste or the savory blend of tangy spices. The buns were also a positive but everything else was on the underwhelming side including the fries. They weren’t horrible burgers by any means but it probably wouldn’t be a place we would go out of our way for just the food.
From what I gathered, Mortdecai’s Tavern & Eatery is first and foremost an establishment to drink at. It had the small hole-in-the-wall chill bar vibe where everybody could talk to everybody. Our server was a delight and seemed to know everyone who walked in. It was reminiscent of the Lizard Lounge. I never went there for the food; I went strictly to socialize with people over some drinks. If that’s what you’re looking for, Mortdecai is a great spot for that.
