Visiting Red Rooster Cafe in Harper, KS

Up next on my road trip across Kansas was a stop in Harper, KS where I grabbed lunch at Red Rooster Cafe. It was another one of the restaurants on my list of small-town diners to drop by in 2021.

The parking lot was packed on a weekday afternoon. I made it just in time for the lunch rush and it felt like the whole town of Harper was there eating as well.

I heard many people asking for the lunch special which was the sweet n’ sour pork chops. That sounded pretty good so I went with that along with green beans and spicy spuds. It didn’t take long for the food to arrive and I was off to the races.

The spicy spuds tasted almost like jalapeno poppers which draws no complaint from me. The green beans weren’t anything special and simply something to make me feel like I was eating healthy. What should have been the star of the dish was the pork chop. Unfortunately, the one I received was very dry and tough. I remember being told there were only a few pork chops left which left me wondering if it was precooked and waiting to be served. The glaze was tasty and sweet n sour as advertised but the meat itself was just underwhelming.

I really wanted to like it especially given everyone who was ordering it and the number of people inside. Perhaps it was just a bad batch or a time I should have ordered something else. But for my first visit to Red Rooster Cafe, it was a bit of a downer. Aside from that, everyone was nice. I had zero problems waiting to be served, having drinks refilled or tabbing out. They were polite and engaging throughout my visit.

Here’s their menu:

Happy Dining,
Eddy
