Let’s review A&W Restaurants!

A&W is an American chain of fast-food restaurants known for their burgers and draft root beer. The restaurant was founded in 1923 in Lodi, California. I never knew until recently that the letters stood for the owners last names, Roy Allen and Frank Wright. They started franchising in 1926 and would grow to 900+ locations in present day. Two of them can be found in Wichita on North Maize Road and at Kellogg and Rock connected to Long John Silvers locations.

For the purpose of this review, I stopped by the west side location and utilized the drive-thru.

My order consisted of their Papa Burger, figured since it was Father’s Day weekend, it made sense.

The Papa Burger is their take on a classic burger which consist of two juicy 100% U.S. Beef patties with two slices of melted American cheese. Finished off with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles and our classic A&W Papa Sauce all on a lightly toasted bun. I asked for fries and a root beer.

In hindsight, I should have ordered my meal for dine-in as root beer is always best served in a frosty mug. The to go cup took away from the experience. Even with that, I still would give the nod to Nu Way’s root beer. The fries were ok and somewhat greasy with some sogginess to it.

As for the Papa Burger, I must admit I was quite let down by it. It was advertised as two juicy patties and what I received definitely wasn’t that. The patties were dry as a bone and tasted as if they had been precooked and sitting out in some warming station. To make matters worse, the cheese had an odd thick texture that made the burger feel drier. All in all, I felt that it was a pretty terrible burger. Even worse compared to other national chains.

I could definitely get down on some Long John Silvers since they are connected but I’d probably pass again on trying A&W burgers.

Happy Dining,
