First Look at Birria tj 664

Ever since Tacos tj 664 moved further north, there’s been plans by the owners to hold on to the 803 N. West Street location and turn it into a sister restaurant. The popular Mexican restaurant stayed true to their word and officially opened Birria tj 664.

As you can guess by their name, the new restaurant specializes in all things birria. It’s a place that will operate separately from Tacos tj 664 with a different menu. Many items at Birria tj 664 can only be had there.

I’ve made it no secret I’m a fan of birria along with all things Tacos tj 664. While they are currently open under a “soft opening” pretense, their grand opening will take place Monday, August 2. I dropped in before their soft opening to get a quick look at what to expect.

Inside, not much had changed.

I glanced through their menu and it truly was an all things birria offering. They had their quesabirria, consome, taco birria, birria flautas, birria torta, birria nachos, chilaquiles with birria and more. Reading through the menu felt like the scene in Forrest Gump where Bubba was explaining all the dishes you could make with shrimp. It was endless.

The chilaquiles on their Facebook looked spectacular.

Their kitchen wasn’t entirely ready when I dropped in, but they were able to whip up a plate of birria nachos. I had it with a container of hot salsa and a Mexican Coke. It came with birria meat, refried beans, melted cheese, onions, cilantro, fresco cheese and TJ sour cream all over a bed of their homemade chips. I’m not much of a nachos fan, but this plate had me drooling and wanting more. While it wasn’t served with consome, I was curious how much better it could have been with it.

The beauty of Birria tj 664 is its open a couple of hours before Tacos tj 664 does so you can stop by for a late breakfast or an early lunch. I love the people over there and am excited to get back after their grand opening to try more of their food.
