Wichita’s Underrated Sectors of Town for Food

When it comes to neighborhoods, shopping centers and sectors of town for food, the popular ones that come to most people’s mind are Clifton Square/College Hill, Old Town, Bradley Fair, Greenwich Place, New Market, Delano, Douglas Design District. They are all great in their own right, but what about some underrated and underappreciated pockets of Wichita that are dishing out some fantastic food?

I went out on a mission to find these clusters of dining options. I scoured through the directory of 1000+ eateries to pinpoint fantastic spots in our city where great eats can be found. Here’s what I found:

31st South and Hillside

Probably one of the best tucked away pockets of restaurants in Wichita. You have Chiang Mai Thai which many people will argue is the best Thai restaurant in town. Then there’s my pick for best fried chicken in Wichita, Krispy’s Fried Chicken and Seafood. The recently opened Azul 21 Mexican Restaurant sits nearby. For even more delicious Mexican food, head around 31st street and you’ll find Tienda del Ahorro which is a grocery store with a kitchen inside.

21st & Waco

Stop by 21st & Waco on the weekends and you’ll typically find a bunch of mobile vendors out serving Mexican dishes of all sorts. Latino Dogs, Marineros Tacos Y Mas, The Elote Man, and others are often out there all day. Plus there’s a dessert shop located at the strip center there called Las Delicias. Catercorner to that area is another food truck on the weekends called Churros El Carnaval which is one you definitely have to try.

11th & Bitting

There’s a power combo at the corner in Riverside that houses two places worth checking out: R Coffee House and Cool Breeze Pizza.

13th & Meridian

Near the area of 13th & Merdian is a sector chalk full of good eats. There’s the very first Da Chicken Shak & More location and Copper Oven Cafe. A new Mexican seafood place can be found near there called Marina’s Mexican Seafood. One place I haven’t been to in a while since they rebranded themselves is Want Bierock Company & Coffee House.

North West Street

I don’t see why this street gets more credibility for it’s amazing collection of restaurants. This is a long stretch but on north West Street, it’s a crazy delicious eclectic mix of food options. Thai House, Tacos TJ 664, Crazy Crab Seafood, Tokyo Japanese Cuisine, Le Monde, a ton of fast food and maybe two taco places you’ve heard of: Taco Shop and Taco Tico.

Happy Dining,
Eddy
