One of my favorite restaurants, not just in Derby, but in the Wichita metro area is Sharon’s Place. They are a Hawaiian restaurant located off K-15. They’ve been in business for just under five years. I’ve lost count of the number of times I’ve dropped in for lunch, dinner or even to say “Hi” while grabbing pizza at the nearby Pizza John’s establishment. Most of my family has not been in to dine-in so I decided to bring some of them with me to get some of the Sharon’s Place love that I’ve grown accustomed to.

For dinner, we went with the Surf & Turf plate which was a combination of Sharon’s teriyaki beef with garlic butter shrimp and the Chicken Katsu Plate. Each dish came with two sides. We had the sauteed cabbage, steamed rice and macaroni salad.
Steamed rice is steamed rice, as long as it’s nice and fluffy, it’ll be fine. But the other sides were phenomenal. Sauteed cabbage is one of those sides I would have thrown a temper tantrum over having to eat as a kid, but decades later I loved it. And I’m not sure there’s a better macaroni salad in the area. It’s such a vibrant tasting side that doesn’t feel so heavy.
But of course, the true stars are always the main courses at Sharon’s Place. I had the Surf & Turf plate and the teriyaki flavor was just the right amount of sweetness to counter the savoriness to the dish. The beef was tender while the shrimp were plump and tasty.
Meanwhile, chicken katsu which was a boneless skinless chicken thigh seasoned & coated with Panko bread crumbs was another outstanding dish. The Panko crumbs made for a light breading to give the chicken some texture. It was a simple yet delicious meal that made for some happy customers.
When it comes to the people, the folks at Sharon’s Place are 5-star quality people. Writing about restaurants, I’ve had the opportunity to meet many nice folks in the business. Sharon’s is right up there at the top in my time. They’re one of the restaurants who have had the chance to see my daughter in so many stages of her young life. I look forward to the day, she’s old enough to say, “Dad, can we go to Sharon’s Place?”
I’ll say “Yes” without hesitation.
