Sport Burger Revisited

One of my favorite burgers in town is a little drive-through restaurant located near Douglas and Hillside. It’s a bright yellow building you can’t miss especially when they open at 11 a.m. with a long line of cars. Of course, I’m talking about Sport Burger.

Sport Burger is a no frills drive-through only restaurant. Ounce for ounce, it’s one of the most affordable burgers in town. If you priced out every burger in Wichita, they are one of the best values in town for price per ounce. In the end, what you get is a quick, cheap and easy burger.

For my most recent trip, a buddy and I dropped off a replacement picnic table as their original one was stolen. It was the first time I’ve ever heard of someone stealing a picnic table from a restaurant. While there, my buddy told me he had never eaten at Sport Burger. I was floored so I made sure we ordered some burgers before leaving.

He had a double bacon cheeseburger with fries while I went with a double cheeseburger.

The burger patties at Sport Burger are the type that’s smashed down and cooked medium well. If you’re looking to get full, order a double. After placing our order, we were given bags with grease marks on them, which is always a good thing at any burger joint.

We tore open the bags like it was Christmas morning and received gifts that even Santa would be jealous of. Our burgers were beautiful. The buns were soft and the type that formed to your fingers. The patties were well-seasoned and still quite juicy. And most of all, they were delicious. After a few bites, my buddy looked at me and said, “This is one of the best burgers I’ve had in town.” The fries had a nice coating of salt to them and a great compliment to the burger.

Sport Burger doesn’t serve the big thick burger patties or the burgers with all sorts of zany toppings to it. They keep it simple which still goes a long ways.

Moreover, the owners are some of the nicest people you’ll ever meet if you ever get a chance to speak with them.
