It’s been a few years since I last walked into Fat Ernie’s Family Dining. But after being nudged by so many readers, I figured why not drop in for something I’ve never had there… breakfast. While the south side restaurant is popular for their many all-you-can-eat specials like spaghetti, catfish, fried chicken, and more, I went a different route and dropped in during the morning.

Fat Ernie’s didn’t miss a beat from the last time I was in. The parking lot was packed; every stall was taken. When I walked in, there was no shortage of diners inside. It was a busy weekday morning with tons of regulars in attendance and the staff was on their A game. I could hear diner after diner being greeted by name which is always a cool thing to witness. It felt like a small-town diner where everybody was family except for that one stranger from the big city coming in and oddly taking pictures of the menu.
For breakfast, I opted to go with the fajita chicken scramble which included white fajita chicken, cheese, sauteed onions, bell pepper, tomatoes and mushrooms. It was served over a bed of hashbrowns and came with a side of toast.
It was a gut buster that was guaranteed to leave me stuffed and wanting to crawl back in bed afterwards. The scrambler was hearty, delicious and the perfect comfort food to start my day. It was all mixed perfectly well together to give that classic breakfast flavor with the bell peppers, tomatoes and salsa giving it that extra sweet burst to counter the richness of the meal.
My service was excellent and just as good as the tables next to me. Everyone was friendly, and the food came out swiftly. All in all, a great quick and convenient breakfast stop.
Here’s their menu.
