It’s that time of year when my visits to the mall pick up. And with that, it means I spend some time in the food court checking out what eats are available. Nothing new has popped up in a while there, so I figured I’d revisit Athens. They are no strangers to Mediterranean food, as it was owned a couple of years ago by the former owner of Marrakech Cafe. The concept of Athens is simple; they offer quick fast Mediterranean food to people looking an affordable convenient meal. They are located in the food court at Towne East Square.

The menu features gyros, rice platters, salads, soups, and popular sides like hummus and grape leaves. Everything on the menu is under $8 except for a special double gyro where you can get two gyros for $9. Other than that, it’s easy to eat for cheap while at Towne East.
We ordered an assortment of different gyros including lamb & beef and chicken, then we had a lamb and beef platter and a Greek salad. The lines were long, but they did a great job of pumping the food out in a timely manner.
To those people who love big portions at a great price, Athens should be right up your alley.
We all thoroughly enjoyed the lamb. It was tender and flavorful. The pita bread that came with the gyro and the platter was soft and warm. We agreed that the hummus could have used a little work; it was missing something. We couldn’t quite put our finger on it, but we have had better in town. The Greek salad was pretty standard; lots of dressing, Feta cheese, then plenty of cucumbers and tomatoes to give the salad some texture. The star of the meal was definitely the lamb, though.
For what it was, we enjoyed it. I don’t think most people would put Athens on par with some of the top level Mediterranean spots in town. At the same time, I don’t think their intention was to go and compete with them. What they do, which is offering affordable, delicious food with speed, they did well. We had no complaints about that and would certainly stop by again during our next visit to the mall.
Here’s their menu:
