Los Cocos Mexican Restaurant Revisited

We decided to revisit a restaurant we haven’t been to in some time, Los Cocos Mexican Restaurant. It’s a place I used to frequent with friends many years ago for their margarita specials. While they have two locations outside of Wichita in Derby (1257 N. Rock Road) and Andover (324 E. Cloud Ave.), we stopped by their Wichita store at 1335 N. Tyler Road for dinner.

Los Cocos offers a mix of Tex-Mex and Mexican cuisine on their menu. Like many restaurants of its kind, they offered complimentary chips and salsa to begin our meal. The chips came out hot and coated with a nice amount of salt and that was the best part. Otherwise, the chips and even the salsa weren’t all that memorable.

We also ordered a couple of 16oz. margaritas, which were on special. Since they were very busy that day, the presentation wasn’t the greatest, but the drinks were delicious, especially the strawberry one.

For our main entrees, we went with the Chile verde and the enchiladas verdes. As you can tell, we were both feeling all the verde for dinner. Both platters came out quickly and we were ready to eat.

The margaritas were great, but the food was slightly underwhelming. What we love about the verde sauce is its tart, tangy, zesty flavor that’s bright and refreshing. We don’t necessarily need the heat, but it’s a bonus if it’s there. Unfortunately, that was missing here at Los Cocos.

The shredded pork in my Chile verde was very tough; and some pieces were hard to the point I spit it out.

The restaurant was packed, so they must be doing something right. For us, though, we walked out the door with that feeling we should have gone elsewhere. Judging by business, we may be in the minority in that opinion.

Service-wise, they did a phenomenal job for the staff they had hustling and bustling with every table taken. That along with the margaritas were probably the two bright spots about our visit.
