Evergreen Community Center & Library
For the next visit in the Family Fun Series, I took my daughter to check out The Evergreen Community Center and Library, located at 2601 N. Arkansas. It’s a completely renovated space that makes better use of the area they have available.
The new facility houses the Evergreen Branch Library, the Evergreen Neighborhood Resource Center, Empower, Kansas Hispanic Education & Development Foundation, Salud + Bienestar, Kansas Department for Children & Families, Wichita Police Department and Metropolitan Area Building and Construction Department. The goal was to bring together essential community services under one roof to better serve residents in Wichita’s North End.
Some information you’ll want to know:
- Library services will be available 10 a.m.-8 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Friday-Saturday, 1-5 p.m. Sunday
- Neighborhood Resource Center and Empower services will be available 8:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Monday-Thursday, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Friday and will be closed noon-1 p.m. daily for lunch
- All other agencies will operate within the facility’s open business hours.
Big, colorful murals line nearly every wall in the library area. Then of course books, magazines, movies for people of all backgrounds fill the shelves.
Much of our time was spent in the kids’ area where they had a little play area with rubber Legos, a computer, and all the books a child would ever need.
They even had my daughter’s favorite series on hand, The Pout-Pout Fish.
I took some video snippets that we now watch over and over and over and over and over at home. The funny thing is, she played on the computer for a bit, struggled with using the mouse, then went to the Legos for 5 minutes and looked at some books, roamed the aisles and always asks, “Can we go libwawy?” (R’s are also a struggle sometimes for her).
