Very exciting times are ahead for Derby, KS. It’s not the steakhouse residents have been clamoring for years about. Instead, it’s a multi-sport and entertainment complex that could very well draw lots of people into Derby.
The Sandbox at Derby is nearing completion in Derby, with an anticipated Grand Opening in late spring or early summer. The 11.2-acre facility is located near the intersection of Cambridge and Rock Road. It will offer sand volleyball, indoor and outdoor pickleball courts, cornhole and other yard games, along with a two-story restaurant and bar with an open-air rooftop patio overlooking the playing courts. Sports will operate year-round at Sandbox courtesy of a 65,000 square foot seasonal dome, the largest of its kind in Kansas.
Sandbox Derby will fill a growing demand for outdoor recreational hotspots in the area and offer unique food and beverage options. Along with the full-service restaurant, the complex will also host events. With a variety of spaces to accommodate all size groups, Sandbox will be a hub for all corporate and social gatherings. Developer Chas Tulipana owns a similar facility in Kansas City also named The Sandbox. The Derby facility will be nearly four times the size of the Kansas City property.
“The folks in Derby sold us on the community, and now it’s time for us to give back,” Tulipana says. “This is a forward-looking city that wants to grow, and we want to grow with them. A big part of our success will be our community involvement.”
Volleyball and Pickleball league signs have already started here. A Facebook post stated that the projected start date for those leagues should be in mid-May.
