Carryout restaurants are picking up steam in Wichita. The latest one to open is The Nelson’s Kitchen at 6829 E. Kellogg Drive, which is the former Sal’s Japanese Steakhouse that closed over five years ago. Just east of Woodlawn on Kellogg, The Nelson’s Kitchen is kind of tucked away at the east end of the Sal’s building. There you’ll find a little window to order from.

Some people may recognize the owners as they ran Brint’s Diner a few years ago. Another thing some diners may want to take note of is they have a sign advertising themselves as the “only place in town with Valerie’s famous sweet heat” referring to a wing sauce popularized by Wings and Things on east Central years ago.
The menu features wings, fried fish, cheese steaks, inventive burgers and more. Since they were advertising the Sweet Heat sauce, I had to get those and mix in some spicy Hawaiian sauce, which they highly recommended. As a bonus, I ordered some cabbage along with a big cup of Kool-Aid. It sounded too good to pass up.
I took my food back to my car and grubbed away. The cabbage which I completely forgot to take a picture of (but I did video!) was probably the best cabbage I’ve ever had in Wichita. I’m not sure what they did to it, but it had some heat to it, along with chunks of meat inside. Seriously, the best cabbage ever. And this is coming from someone who has traditionally disliked it.
As for the wings, they were indeed reminiscent of Wings and Things. Both sauce options provided a subtle kick but mixed in with some sweetness. It truly was sweet heat, and the spicy Hawaiian sauce was fairly similar. The meal was stellar, and the Kool-Aid was just the cherry on top.
If you’d rather get a video look at The Nelson’s Kitchen, here you go!
