First Look at Tamales & Monchis; the restaurant specializing in all things tamales

Tamales & Monchis GTO

A new restaurant has opened at 1920 W. 21st Street in the space previously occupied by Uno Mas. Its called Tamales & Monchis and as you can guess by the name, they specialize in all things tamales. No longer do you have to wait until the end of the year to get your hands on tamales, this restaurant will now have them year round.

Even though they specialize in tamales, they had enchiladas on special, so I had to order some. They were shaped similar to a taquito and were pretty good.

But let’s get to the real reason for my visit, the tamales. They had some traditional tamales available, along with tamales prepared in banana leaf. I went with one of each.

While I enjoyed the traditional tamale, the banana leaf was by far my favorite. There’s a noticeable difference in texture in flavor between the two. For me, I loved the softer texture. It had a slightly sweeter flavor and allowed me to really taste everything like the meat and sauce without the heavy dose of masa. It’s all personal preference, but the banana leaf just hits different and I loved every second of it. So much, that I got some extra to go.

I’m not a huge dessert person, but had to try their dessert tamales. They had pineapple, strawberry and Oreo available. My favorite of the three was the pineapple. A couple sitting at a separate table was eyeing all my dessert tamales, so I offered them half of my Oreo and they probably devoured that thing in seconds. They said, they’ve never had anything like it and loved it.

The family running the new restaurant that’s been open for about a week were so nice. Many customers were coming in and asking all sorts of questions, and they didn’t hesitate to politely answer every one of them. I’ll be back again for more banana leaf tamales.
