This year marked the 90th year of business for Old Mill Tasty Shop . That’s quite an achievement considering the lifespan of an average restaurant. For them to make it that long, is a testament to the food along with the entire staff of owners, cooks, and servers who keep churning happy customers.
Or perhaps it’s the green chili….. or just all the above.

The restaurant located at 604 E. Douglas, right across from Naftzger Park, serves sandwiches, soups, Mexican dishes, soda fountain drinks, desserts, and daily blueplate specials that vary every day. I’ve lost count of the times I’ve eaten there. What I do know is every time I visit Old Mill Tasty Shop, I get their green chili in some fashion.
When I dropped by, their blueplate special of the day was chicken enchilada with red or green chili. By now, you should know I went with the green chili. My special was served with chips, beans and a big scoop of sour cream on top of the enchilada.
To this day, nothing will ever beat the chicken enchiladas that The Cedar used to serve when I was in college. Unfortunately, The Cedar closed years ago, but the closest and next best thing is Old Mill Tasty Shop. It helps that the green chili is probably my favorite of all the chili in Wichita.
The burrito came out swimming in the chili. There was a bit of heat in each bite, and it was the good, flavorful type of heat that kept you coming back for more. I’m not sure if there’s some addictive drug they put inside. If they do, I’m not complaining! The burrito was filled with tons of chicken and topped with plenty of cheese to give it that extra oomph to fill you up. Overall, it was a delicious hearty plate of food I probably would have ordered two of if my stomach allowed me to.
I say that because I needed to save room for a root beer float. One thing everybody should always do is order a fountain drink, sundae, malt, or dessert from them.
Aside from the food, they have some of the best servers in all of Wichita. For as busy as they are, I’ve never had bad service there and they’ve always been super-friendly to everybody.
They’ve built the perfect recipe for longevity in the local restaurant scene: good quality food and friendly service all under one roof.

Happy Dining,

Tried their smothered burrito today for the first time… WOW. So good.
I always loved their spinach salad. Yum!
