What is likely the city’s favorite Dairy Queen, dubbed The Little Dairy Queen, has reopened for another summer.
People were curious as to when or if it would even come back after owner Richard Barrett celebrated his 90th birthday last year. Well, good news arrived when Barrett opened their drive thru to the public.
He was looking for someone to purchase The Little Dairy Queen, but it appears there were no takers at the time. So instead, Richard Barrett returned for another year at the store.
Some things people will want to note if they drive over to 849 S. Poplar where the store is located. It’s drive-thru only at the moment. In past years, you could walk up to order at the window, but to make it easier on the limited staff, it’s all drive-thru. They were also having some issues with the card reader, so it’s also cash only at the moment. Hours for the Little Dairy Queen are Monday through Saturday 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. and closed on Sundays.
Keep in mind, this isn’t a full-fledged Dairy Queen like you see elsewhere around town. Don’t fret though, Barrett and his crew make a mean Blizzard.
I had the honor to talk with Barrett and he was in great spirits. He was proud to tell me that he’s been with Dairy Queen for 45 years. As I was there, it was cool to see customers pulling up to the drive thru and saying hello to Richard. It was easy to see, he’s had many long time customers and fans.
@wichitabyeb One of the coolest people you’ll ever meet is Richard Barrett who is 90 years young and been with @Dairy Queen for 45 years. He’s owned a location in Wichita for 35 years and been making the best blizzards on the side of the Mississippi. #vlog #fyp #Wichita #dairyqueen #foodies ♬ Adore – Instrumental – GC
