We are huge fans of the Sedgwick County Zoo. So, when I was asked to judge their Mexican food fest, Chimps and Salsa, I jumped at the opportunity.
If you’ve never been, the event was in its fourth year. There was live music from local and regional Hispanic bands, kids activities, kids face painting, free shirts, and many Mexican food vendors on hand. Chimps and Salsa was included in the regular zoo admission.
To top things off, the weather couldn’t have any more perfect for a June afternoon.
All the Mexican food vendors had a little friendly competition. A panel of judges were tasked with deciding who had the best dish.

After pigging out on all the food and drink, it was Tacos tj 664 who won it all with their steak and shrimp taco that came with a delicious side of mango salsa that I haven’t had from there before.
While voting on all the dishes, two dishes were tied for my favorite. The taco from Tacos tj 664 and the alambre from Alondra’s Tacos. It consisted of grilled beef topped with chopped bacon, bell peppers, onions, cheese, avocado, and pineapple. I’m going to have to see if that’s available at their restaurant.
Here’s a video recap of our experience at Chimps and Salsa.
@wichitabyebBack to back days judging Mexican food. Was at it again for Chimps & Salsa at the Sedgwick County Zoo. More Mexican food? I’m definitely not complaining. Fun times with the panel including Joe Stumpe, Officer Cruz and Mayor Whipple.♬ BREAK MY SOUL – Beyoncé
