First Look at Fatburger & Buffalo’s Express

Wichita’s first Fatburger and Buffalo’s Express recently opened at 2556 N. Greenwich Road. The first of what should be three locations in town brought out numerous fans, first-timers and foodies who were excited to check out the new place. Our group was a part of the first-timers who had never been to one before.

The chain based out of California with over 200 locations announced they were coming a year ago. So, the build up has been quite strong, thus why there were long lines during opening week. With the lines, you expect to see longer than average ticket times. That’s something to keep in mind if you plan to go over the lunch hour if you have a limited amount of time.

During our visit, we ordered an assortment of different burgers with all sorts of toppings combinations, all the fries they had available, and some wings.

Here are some pictures of what we had:

I had a large Fatburger with “The Works” that included mayo, lettuce, tomato, pickles, onions, relish, mustard, and cheese. My friends and I also split a large order of wings with different flavors.

The burgers lived true to the name of the restaurant. They were certainly hefty and fat. Everyone at my table enjoyed their burgers. I particularly liked the outer layer of crisp on each patty while still maintaining some juiciness. Ordering “The Works” provided lots of different textures and more substance. It was greasy, but not so much that it was overbearing.

And while I enjoyed the burger, the wings may have been better. Usually, the national chains that offer wings put out these dinky, tiny wings without much meat on them. That wasn’t the case here. Similar to the burgers, the wings were fat and meaty. At first glance, the wings didn’t look that big, but they provided lots of meat on each one. The Cajun seasoning was probably my favorite flavor out of the bunch.

The fries could have used more salt and seasoning. That was likely the biggest area for improvement, food wise.

As far as fast casual burger chains go, I’d rank Fatburger higher on the list compared to the competition. It was a good burger, albeit on the pricier side when you compare it.
