Something new is opening on Monday, August 22 in the former Kanai space at 12111 W. Maple. Maple Street Pizza Company has taken over the space formerly held by Kanai and Lilikoi Asian Bistro. Specializing in 12-inch wood-fired artisan pizzas, they look to add more local dining to the area of Maple and 119th. We dropped by to give you a sneak peek at what to expect before they open to the public.

If you’ve ever been to the previous restaurants, you’ll know that seating is a bit limited. Maple Street Pizza Company will take carryout orders and be utilizing the drive-thru for those on the go doing call ahead orders. They also have a fully stocked bar for those wanting a date night; which this place is great for.
We started our evening with a carafe of white sangria. It was quite refreshing, and could be dangerous if you have nowhere else to be later in the day and lose track of how many you order.
For a starter, we had the meatballs and marinara that came with house-made focaccia. You can never go wrong with meatballs, but seriously, the focaccia may have been my favorite part.
We may have gone a little overboard on our pizza order. We had the:
- Pepperoni: House red sauce, shredded mozzarella, Parmesan cheese & pepperoni, gluten-free optional
- Florentine Chicken: Creamy white sauce with mozzarella, roasted chicken, garlic confit, red onions, spinach, artichoke hearts, sun-dried tomatoes & Parmesan cheese
- Beau Thai: Signature Thai sauce with roasted red peppers, red onion, roasted chicken, mozzarella, Parmesan cheese & chives, gluten-free optional
- Enter the Dragon: Cream cheese base with lump crab meat, scallions, crispy wonton strips & sweet soy glaze (we ordered this spicy).
The pizzas didn’t take long at all. I had the Enter the Dragon and Beau Thai and there was no doubt in my mind, the Beau Thai was my favorite. The Thai sauce significantly elevated everything; there was an addictive sweetness in every bite that made you come back for more. There were huge chunks of roasted chicken that ensured you didn’t leave hungry. I couldn’t stop myself from eating, even though I knew I was already full.
The Enter the Dragon was great, but I certainly would have loved some more spice in each bite; something that can be easily fixed.
We had one regret. We ate so much to the point we were unable to find room for dessert. That only gives us a reason to come back. Exciting times ahead for west Wichita with Maple Street Pizza Company in the mix.
