One of my favorite restaurants in Wichita is getting a second location! On my most recent visit to Taqueria La Chona, I was told they are planning to expand to southwest Wichita later this year.
The Mexican restaurant, located at 3415 E Harry St. has been on our rotation since first opened in 2020. Specializing in food native to Jalisco, Mexico, I have stopped by there for a dish called Carne en su Jugo multiple times. If you’ve never had it, the dish is hugely popular in Jalisco, Mexico. Carne en su Jugo translates to “meat in its juice”. It is a concentrated, flavorful broth of beef meat finely diced and served with beans plus a wide array of toppings served alongside. Not many places serve it, so Taqueria La Chona is a must stop for me.
When I picked it up, I was talking to the employees and it looks like the plan is to open their second restaurant dubbed, Fonda La Chona, hopefully by November. The new restaurant will be at 1210 W. Pawnee in the former Jimmy Egg’s space, who closed earlier this year. The second store allows them to expand their menu and offer more alcoholic drinks than just beer.
This is great news for diners who are tired of the same Mexican food, as the owners at Taqueria La Chona certainly bring something different to the table in terms of flavor.
