A sneak peek inside Mochinut and their mochi donuts and Korean hotdogs

Mark your calendars for Friday, November 18. The soft opening for Mochinut finally takes place at 343 S. Greenwich Road, which most recently was Da Chicken Shak & More. The new restaurant at Kellogg and Greenwich will be the first place in Wichita to specialize in mochi donuts, Korean hot dogs and more.

If you’ve never had a mochi donut, it’s a combination of an American donut and a Japanese mochi. And if you’ve never had mochi, it’s a sweet and sticky ice cream that is basically a rice cake formed to a small, bite-sized confection with a chewy, smooth, elastic texture. From there, eight mochi balls are fried to create a donut-shaped pastry that offers a light, crispy exterior with a soft, chewy inside with the donut’s signature hole in the middle.

This is a fantastic treat for all donut lovers along with mochi fans.

I stopped by a pre-opening event and they had a handful of different flavors to choose from. They had fruity pebbles, cinnamon churro, raspberry funnel cake, mango coconut, strawberry, and cookies & dreams.

We went with the cinnamon churro and strawberry. Wanting to continue with the sugar rush, we also ordered a milk tea boba and brown sugar boba.

One cool thing to note about their boba was that it came in a seltzer like can, complete with a lid. I liked the concept and how much easier they were to carry and hold. It was a nice differentiator from the many other boba options in town. We were big fans of their mochi donuts; they were firmer than any other one in Wichita. Most recently, we had a mochi donut from another business that was flimsy and soggy. I know this treat is relatively new and not often found, but so far, Mochinut has set the bar.

We couldn’t leave without ordering some Korean hot dogs and went with their potato and hot Cheetos. Talk about filling. Between this and the donuts, I’m not sure that we needed another meal for the rest of the day.

I’m told that Mochinut will also be using their drive-thru once they get their operations down. While the grand opening won’t be taking place until mid-December, they will be open to the public every day 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. There’s always a chance they may close earlier if they sell out, which could very well be the case on their soft opening day November 18. Another thing to note, they’ll soon be adding soft serve to the menu.

Either way, this is a very cool addition to Wichita, who I feel sometimes gets tired of seeing the same old thing.

Here’s the menu:

Happy Dining,
Eddy
