Happy Lunar New Year! It’s almost time to welcome the Year of the Rabbit. There will be many events all over town. Churches, restaurants, and local businesses will be getting in on the fun.

I looked around for what’s taking place for the new year and rounded up some of the best events in Wichita to mark the occasion and help you celebrate. Please let us know if you see an event that we don’t have listed. Just send me over an email or drop it in the comments below.

Where to Celebrate the Lunar New Year


Saturday, January 21

Kimson Asian Market – Starts at 1 p.m.
Come out and celebrate Lunar New Years with us! We will have two lion dances on Saturday (1/21/23) at KIMSON ASIAN MARKET. The first performance will be at 1 p.m. by the St. Anthony Team and the second performance starts at 1:45 p.m. by the East High Team.

Lunar New Yew Mochi Celebration – Starts at 2 p.m.
Come celebrate Lunar New Year with us! Special performance from the St. Anthony Lion Dance Team at 2pm, limited giveaways, special flavors, and maybe even a dancing hot dog?

Wichita Public Library – 1:30 p.m. to 3:15 p.m.
Get ready for Lunar New Year with us! We’ll learn about annual traditions with the Wichita Asian Association, bring in good fortune with the East High Lion Dance club, and learn about lucky ways to start the new year. For kids and teens ages 5-18 and their families.

Asian Variety Show at the Kansas Star Casino – Starts at 8 p.m.
Enjoy the Asian Variety Show. It’s an all ages event that’s also free to attend for B Connected Members of the Kansas Star Casino. There’s a limit 4 tickets.

Sunday, January 22

Saigon Oriental Restaurant – 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
“TET” CELEBRATION (Lunar New Year). This year, Saigon Oriental Restaurant celebrates the year of the Rabbit! This will be an all-day event, on Sunday, February 22. Li Xi (Lucky Red Envelops) given to dine-in customers. Then at 12:30 p.m., the Lion Dance Performance (popularly known as Dragon Dance) will perform.

Mansion Nail Lounge – Starts at 1 p.m.
The nail salon at 4842 S. Broadway will be celebrating the Lunar New Year with a dragon dance, food, drink, and lucky money!

Thai Binh Supermarket – Starts at 3 p.m.

Paint the Towne – 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.
We will be featuring Lunar New Year items for creating All open studio items available, canvas, wood signs, and pottery Prices range from $11-$40

Feng Cha – Starts at 4 p.m.
You are invited to celebrate the Lunar New Year at Feng Cha. There will be the dragons dance and over 200 ft. in firecrackers. They will be giving out lucky money envelopes and Boba keychains for hte first 100 customers at 4 p.m.

Monday, January 23

Wichita State University: Rhatigan Student Center – From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Experience the traditions, activities, and performances to celebrate the Lunar New Year! The Lunar New Year is a celebration, which starts with the first new moon of the lunisolar calendar and continues until the first full moon. For many Asian cultures, Lunar New Year is a celebration of change, a moment to renew oneself and a time to welcome in the coming year with family and friends.

Where to Find the St. Anthony’s Lion & Dragon Dance Team

As you can see, a common theme at the events is St. Anthony’s Lion & Dragon Dance Team.

They are the 6th Generation of the Lion Dance Team of St. Anthony! Their history goes back to the 1990s. It has been over three decades, when the founders decided to form the team, their dedication made it into reality and grew to prosperity ever since.
