Wednesday marked the start of the 2023 Lenten season. Depending on your religious beliefs, some people avoid meat on Ash Wednesday and all the Fridays of Lent. With my mother being a devout Catholic, we were raised on Long John Silvers every Friday; that or the Filet-O-Fish sandwich at McDonald’s. Both, which happen to be guilty pleasures of mine now. Thanks, mom!
For many of you, Long John Silver’s and McDonald’s may not be your thing. If you’re trying to eat out during Lent, there are so many restaurants that have seafood or Vegetarian dishes specifically for this time of year. It’d be exhausting creating a list of those places so I’m going to focus on the places where I have visited in the past. Granted, I’ll be the first to admit, sometimes I make a mistake (or purposely do it) and eat meat. Don’t tell my mom.
Wichita Fish Co. – 818 N Mosley St.
This is a staple for many people on Fridays. Just be careful because this place gets PACKED during lunchtime. They have one of the largest variety of seafood dishes in town
Crafted – 9730 E 21st St. N.
A fresh poke bowl is one of the easiest, quickest and most convenient stops for lunch or dinner.
Blue Hook – 2244 N Webb Rd
One of Wichita’s seafood boil options that will make sure you won’t leave hungry.
Newport Grill – 1900 N Rock Road
When it comes to fine dining for seafood, nobody does it better than Newport Grill.
Fish & More – 2021 Oliver
Get the catfish. ‘Nuff said
Da Cajun Shak – 6249 E 21st St. N.
One of my favorite little spots for some fried deliciousness.
Hook & Reel – 353 S. Rock Road
This Cajun seafood and bar has plenty of seafood options to get you by for Lent.
When Pigs Fly – 7011 W Central Ave
Who would have thought a BBQ restaurant would be an option for Lent? This restaurant offers unique specials like smoked lobster tails that will please all taste buds.
Ninza Sushi – 8641 W 13th St. N
Sushi is always a great option for meatless Fridays. This is also a good reason to check out the newly relocated Ninza Sushi at 8641 W. 13th St. N.
Our Lady of Perpetual Help – 2351 N. Market
Not necessarily a restaurant, but this church in North Wichita has a popular Meatless Fridays dinner special every Friday. It’s one of the busiest places in town. Watch this video to learn more.
Of course, there are plenty of other restaurants offering dishes and specials to meet your meatless restrictions. I’ve seen places like The Rusty Nail, Old Mill Tasty Shop, Tiger Rice Japanese Kitchen, La Chinita, Connie’s Mexico Cafe, Old Tokyo Steakhouse and others offer po boys, fish sandwiches, enchiladas and more.
Happy Dining,
Eddy
