This is an idea that’s been brewing in my head for years. Talk to an owner and see if they’d be willing to open their restaurant on a day they’re closed, invite a bunch of readers, and have the owner/chef/whoever whip up something they’ve always wanted to do. All plated meals, no menus, people eat what they’re served. Let the people in the kitchen work their magic and take the stress away from trying to decide what to eat. Then have everyone in either a U-shaped or square seating arrangement so we could talk among each other and have group conversations that felt intimate about food, restaurants, anything. Perhaps get a tour of the restaurant, hear from the owner, and learn about their origins. That’s the whole goal behind the Wichita By E.B. Dinner Series.
I can finally announce, it’s a go. Two restaurants are lined up for the series, with the first one taking place in April.
To the people who are upset that Station 8 BBQ is never open for dinner, well, they will be for one night. The BBQ restaurant at 1100 E 3rd St. N has agreed to be the first installment of the series. I met with owner Alex Eftekhar and he is planning to create a meal that’s never been served before at his restaurant. It’s something he’s been wanting to do and on this particular night, we will be his guinea pigs. Plus, the team over at Una Vida will be on hand. We are still discussing how their stuff will be a part of the night.
What are the deets?
It’s going to take place on a Monday evening in late April. Since I’m not any type of event host, I’m currently in the process of deciding how the ticket process will work because this will be limited to ~20 people.
How can someone purchase tickets?
I was trying to think of the fairest way to do tickets and first come, first serve was the only thing that came to mind that gave everyone an equal chance. In the coming weeks, I’m going to announce the time and day tickets will be available. The link will be sent out to all email subscribers, which you can sign up below. Then on that day, the email goes out with the link and once all ~20 tickets are gone, they’re gone. I might hold 2 back for a surprise.
If the form isn’t working, head here.
The cost of the dinner series
Truth be told, this won’t be a cheap night. Obviously, the price of meat isn’t cheap, so I’ve given Station 8 BBQ a heads-up that they should be compensated for their time and the price will reflect that. They are opening on their day off and we need to be appreciative of that. To help keep cost down, I’m going to get my hands dirty and do a little serving that evening.
The attire
Wear whatever the hell makes you feel comfortable. I know, I am. Who knows, I may be there in sweatpants, jeans, or maybe even a onesie.
What else to expect
I have no idea really how this will turn out. My end goal is to grub with people who love food as much as I do. It’s extremely rare that I put myself out there with readers, so let’s have fun conversations over some drinks. I’ve lost count of the number of times, people have messaged me asking to grab lunch or dinner. Now is the time.
My goal in life is to live for the moments and have fun. That’s what the purpose of this night will be.
And if you can’t make this one, I’m sorry. But there will be another one planned as the Rickard brothers over at FioRito Ristorante will be the next installment of the Wichita By E.B. Dinner Series.
Stay tuned for more!
