First Look at Rail Hoppers

Rail Hoppers

A new restaurant has opened in an area of town that could definitely use more places to eat. Rail Hoppers is currently open under a soft opening pretense. Located near Oliver and K-96, right next to Aloft Hotel, it’s hard to miss this building if you’re driving down Oliver.

The restaurant is the latest venture for Schane Gross, who also owns The Anchor at 1109 E. Douglas.

Walking inside, you could tell a lot of work was done in the build. There was also a patio facing the south end of the building, but they didn’t have tables and chairs out yet. Rail Hoppers has been described as high-end feel, but not fine dining. It felt like a place you could come in office work attire, or jeans and a t-shirt. There wasn’t a dive bar feel, nor was it stuffy; just somewhere in the middle. Granted, it was like their first or second day of opening, so it’s really hard telling. Over time, I’m sure Rail Hoppers will find their personality, so to speak.

Since it was a soft opening, they didn’t have a full menu out yet. I was told that would be coming in the weeks ahead, which would include items like steaks. Much of what you can find at their sister restaurant, The Anchor, was available at Rail Hoppers.

For whatever reason, the meatloaf caught my eye and that’s what I went with. A couple of friends happened to walk inside as I ordered and they ended up joining me and both went with the Haystack burger.

My meatloaf was fantastic. I loved the bacon onion jam that sat over the top of my ball of meat. But I have to give a shoutout to the accompanying side of garlic mashed potatoes. Sides often go unnoticed, this was the most memorable mashed potatoes I’ve had in a restaurant.

I should also note, the restaurant will soon have 24 beers on tap. The bar was quite spacious with plenty of seating, and I could see it as a great after-work destination for those nearby.
