Wichita’s Little Free Libraries now available throughout City Council District III

Wichita Public Library - Little Free Libraries

Now this is very cool and something I saw at Linwood Elementary, Little Free Libraries.

Wichita Public Library, Wichita Literacy Coalition and several community partners have created and installed 26 Little Free Libraries throughout City Council District III. To make them unique, each one is decorated after a letter of the alphabet.

The Little Free Libraries are part of a project to help kids in low literacy areas have better access to books, tools, and resources to explore reading at home. Because, as you know, developing reading skills is important for long-term success of residents, both in school and beyond.

“All children aged five and under deserve access to reading materials that ignite joy for learning and early learning skills,” said Larry Daniels, Program Manager for the Wichita Literacy Coalition.

The 26 Little Free Libraries are decorated for each letter of the alphabet, creating a space where free books and information can be easily accessed by residents. An audio component created by Wichita State University’s Engineering students pronounce letters when the door opens.

Books for early learners and parents will be provided by the Library and community partners; everyone is welcome to use the Little Free Libraries and to share books forward. I have a load of books that my daughter doesn’t read anymore and plan to drop them off soon.

“Strategic investments in family engagement and early literacy efforts are critical as new parents learn about the library and the multitude of ways the library and community partners collaborate to help them raise a reader,” said Jaime Nix, Director of Libraries. “We want to make sure Wichita’s parents and caregivers are aware of how Wichita Public Library can help and how we can connect them to additional resources at their neighborhood branch.”

More information about the Little Free Libraries, including a printable and interactive map of library locations, can be found at wichitalibrary.org. And a shoutout to the project partners for their investment into our community: Evergy, Hutton, Wichita Public Library Foundation, Wichita State University Engineering, and CityArts.
