Free kids activities all around Wichita with The City Crew

The City Crew, Barry the Bison, Beeatrice, Sgt. Justice, Sparky, and Webster are ready to hang out at various events and locations in Wichita this summer.

If your kids haven’t joined yet, the City Crew is a group put on by the City of Wichita and is free and available for kids ages 2-12. Anybody interested, can register to become a member!

As a member, you can join the mascots as they host events throughout Wichita. These events are exclusive to City Crew members and with each visit, you will earn Barry’s Bucks which are entered into a drawing for cool prizes given away each month.

It’s just an additional free activity for your kids to get out, enjoy Wichita and possibly win some cool things!

Here’s the schedule of events:

  • Saturday, July 15
    Fishin’ & Urban Wildlife
Arkansas River/Riverside Tennis Center (551 Nims)
    10am-12pm
Parks are a perfect place to explore and discover the pleasures that urban nature and the great outdoors has to offer.  Crew Members can sign up for a 30-minute fishing session on the banks of the Arkansas River, led by staff from the Great Plains Nature Center and Kansas Wildlife and Parks.  When not fishing, check out the live fish display full of native non-game fish that people don’t typically see in Kansas and go on a guided bird walk.  Get up close with an opossum during an urban wildlife program, create a fish print craft, and work with others to build a fort out of tree branches and sticks.  A limited number of fishing tackle boxes will be given away.
  • Saturday, August 19
    Back to School Bash
    Naftzger Park (601 E. Douglas)
    2-4pm
Say goodbye to summer with a party that is sure to blow your socks off!  Have a blast with inflatables such as an 18 ft. Soccer Dart, Viking Axe Throw, Wacky Backyard Obstacle Course and Wacky 4-Man Equalizer. Then, test your skills with a variety of tabletop carnival games like Quack Attack, Potty Toss and Ring Toss.  Jam to the music while sipping on snow cones, eating popcorn and getting your face painted.  Before you leave, make sure to stop by the school supply table to collect some items that will help you start the school year off right.
  • Saturday, September 9
    Color Run
    Edgemoor Rec. Center (5815 E. 9th St.)
    9:30-11am
Grab a white shirt out of your closet and lace up those sneakers!  This 1-mile outdoor Color Run is where living a healthy lifestyle meets with an explosion of color as runners are doused from head to toe in a different colored powder at various checkpoints along the way.  The event will begin with a group-led warmup at 9:35am to build the excitement, and the race will begin at 9:45am. It doesn’t matter how long it takes you to finish because it’s all about the color! After the race is over, enjoy a group cool down activity at 10:15am and then join the post run party with festive music and a fun Zumba workout.  Make sure you rehydrate with refreshing snow cones, fruit, and water. Everyone’s a winner, and runners will receive a participation medal.  Crew Members will receive a pair of sunglasses at check-in for extra eye protection, but don’t worry as the color is non-toxic!
  • Sunday, October 22
    Owl-O-Ween
Central Riverside Park (720 N. Nims)
    1-3pm
Who wants to see and learn about some cool animals?  The Kansas Wildlife Exhibit is an amazing opportunity to view up close non-releasable and often permanently injured wildlife ambassadors such as a bobcat, beaver, golden eagle, turkey vulture, hawks, quail, turtles and more. Odin, the one-eyed Eastern Screech Owl, will be an Owl-O-Ween ambassador and will be brought out for short periods throughout the event. In addition to the exhibits, Crew Members are in for a special treat with a scavenger hunt that will take you to a variety of stations to learn about owls, snakes, turtles, bats, spiders, insects and more! Don’t forget to pick up a cool animal mask and grab some popcorn along the way. Receive a prize after completing the scavenger hunt and then wander over to the inflatable bounce house to work off some energy.

  • Saturday, November 18

Let’s be merry in the grinchiest of ways at this special holiday whobilation with the one and only Mr. Grinch!   The Grinch will be cracking jokes and posing for photos while Crew Members eat a special breakfast in his honor. You’ll feast, feast, feast on Green Grinch Pancakes, Cindy Lou Who’s Who Hash, Grinch Kabobs and Grinch juice.  Breakfast ends at 10:45am when the reading of “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” begins.  Stick around to make a Grinch ornament that will add some Whoville flair to your tree and don’t forget to stop by the photo booth for some Grinch inspired selfies, which will be both joyful and triumphant!
