When it comes to Mexican restaurants, one of the best and a place I refer to every westsider I know is Puerto Vallarta Mexican Restaurant. Located at the southeast corner of Central and Tyler, they offer made-from-scratch cuisine and dishes that are a break from the popular Tex Mex and fast food tacos that make up most of Northwest Wichita’s Mexican dining scene.

On every visit, I look forward to the complimentary salsa, chips, and bean dip. Admittedly, I’m a sucker for anybody’s complimentary salsa, but Puerto Vallarta’s has a bit more bite to it. And even though I’m not a big fan of beans, their bean dip/sauce is something dreams are made of. I could go to Puerto Vallarta just for that.
Then there is the ceviche, which is easily top three in the city…. maybe even the world. It’s an appetizer I order on every single visit, even carryout orders include this. The fresh shrimp has such a vibrant flavor. It is mixed with serrano peppers, onions, and cucumber and topped with avocado and a splash of agua chile sauce.
On my most recent visit to Puerto Vallarta, I ordered the chile verde which was slow cooked pork in Pedro’s special green tomatillo sauce. It was garnished with cilantro and onions and then served with rice, beans, and tortillas.
It was an excellent dish to round out my lunch. The special green tomatillo sauce was an instant hit with my taste buds. I’m not sure what it all consisted of, but it didn’t matter. I kept going back for more and more.
Truth be told, every dish I’ve had there has been gold. This is a place I’ve probably referred 20–30 friends to and won’t ever stop. I have to make sure this place stays in business.
As always, the staff was fantastic and made my lunch outing another success. I just love everything about Puerto Vallarta.
