Having a ball at the Prairie Nut Hut in Altoona, KS

Prairie Nut Hut Altoona

Who doesn’t love a good “hole in the wall”, especially when you’re visiting a small town? That’s exactly what I came across when passing through Altoona, KS and saw Prairie Nut Hut.

It’s a unique little bar and grill roughly an hour and a half outside of Wichita. This place was also one of the most recommended restaurants I visit while in the area.

There’s a lot to love about the Prairie Nut Hut; a place I was told that’s been around since 1939.

The staple of Altoona, KS is big enough for roughly 40 people, but there were certainly many call-in orders during my visit.

Each table at Prairie Nut Hut had a table of peanuts, where you threw the shells on the ground.

But that’s not the reason for the name Prairie Nut Hut. They’ve earned widespread praise throughout the state of Kansas for serving mountain oysters. When I stopped by to eat, I asked what I should order, and the first thing that came out was just that.

There was a Hoppin Nut Basket that included mountain oysters and frog legs, and that sounded delicious. Then I ordered a large hamburger, and another diner inside suggested I get the onion rings.

The food was fantastic. I really loved the frog legs and mountain oysters; it was safe to say I was having a ball. In hindsight, I should have ordered more mountain oysters to take on the road with me.

And those onion rings? Truth be told, I’m not a huge onion ring guy, but the ones at Prairie Nut Hut were excellent. Often times, I find them to be far too greasy and too much breading. These were the perfect balance.

It was a pretty quick stop for me at Prairie Nut Hut, but I really loved my time there. The staff was incredibly friendly and treated me like I was just another resident of Altoona. I’m usually in the area once a year and will definitely stop by to get more mountain oysters on my next visit.
