First Look at The Peaceful Pachyderm

Peaceful Pachyderm

A new BBQ restaurant has taken over the former Sharon’s Place that closed in 2022. The Peaceful Pachyderm opened late last month at 141 E. Kay St. in Derby, KS. The restaurant, which is a play on words of The Angry Elephant where the owners used to work at, serves chicken, pulled pork, hot links, brisket, ribs, and various sides.

If you’re dining in, The Peaceful Pachyderm has a limited number of tables and chairs, so that’s something to keep in mind if you have a big group with you or visiting during a busy time. It’s a great space for carryout, though.

During my visit, I went with the pick three of ribs, pulled pork and a hot link. My server recommended the mac & cheese and potato salad for my sides.

I started my meal but devouring the sides. They were both really good, especially the mac and cheese, which I could have easily just had that as my lunch and stuck with it.

From there I moved on to the meat. The ribs were first, and I don’t know, but they were just underwhelming. They weren’t all that meaty, and there was a grittiness to the sauce/rub that immediately came off the ribs when I picked it up. To add to that, there was a strong brown sugar flavor or something to that affect in each bite. It was like I could feel the texture of the brown sugar or something powdery. The ribs didn’t do it for me.

And the pulled pork was a bit soggy. I liked the flavor, but the sogginess definitely deterred me from fully enjoying it. On the bright side, I had zero issues with the hot link and loved the mild bit of heat it had.

My first visit to The Peaceful Pachyderm was probably a little under par for me. But they’ve only been open for 2–3 weeks, so that leaves room for improvement. Should you go, your experience could definitely be better than mine with more time under their belts.

Here’s their menu.

Happy Dining,
Eddy
