Celebrate the State of the Arts in Wichita

The Division of Arts and Cultural Services invites residents to celebrate Wichita’s diverse and vibrant arts community at a State of the Arts Community Event from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. tonight, Tuesday, February 27 at the Century II Concert Hall. The free event will feature performances throughout the evening from local dancers, musicians and vocalists along with the main presentation from 6 – 7 p.m.

The State of the Arts event will explore how Wichita arts generates significant economic activity in our community. Randy Cohen of Americans for the Arts will discuss the results of the Arts & Economic Prosperity 6 (AEP6) study in “The Arts Mean Business in Wichita,” and explain how investment in the arts provides both social and economic benefits to our region.

Wichita’s arts and culture industry does more than enhance our quality of life. It is big business—a $185 million industry that supports local jobs, generates government revenue, and is a magnet for tourists. Spending by arts and culture audiences generates valuable commerce for local merchants, a value-add that few other industries can compete with.

In addition to highlighting the City’s participation in AEP6, the State of the Arts Event will also be the public introduction of the revised Cultural Arts Strategic Plan, which seeks to both better serve the Wichita community’s current arts and cultural needs and to anticipate future needs.
