Is Mo’s A-Maize-N BBQ truly amazing? Let’s find out

Mo's A-Maize-In BBQ

A new BBQ restaurant called Mo’s A-Maize-N BBQ has taken over the former Nancy’s A-Maize-N Sandwiches at 5125 N Maize Rd in Maize, KS.

It’s an interesting way to name a restaurant. I haven’t seen this style of restaurant naming done, where a place uses part of the previous establishment’s name since Furr’s became Ourr’s (the F was replaced by an O). In this instance, Nancy’s and Sandwiches was replaced with Mo’s and BBQ.

If you’ve never been to Mo’s A-Maize-N BBQ, there’s a chance you may have tried their food in the past. The owner was part of the group that opened the short-lived The Barbe-Q Pit in 2019. They also had a short run with Masters of Barbeque in Park City in 2023.

The owners originally decided to launch a Kickstarter campaign for $8,500 to help launch a new restaurant. While the funding was unsuccessful, they moved on with starting Mo’s A-Maize-N BBQ.

Mo's A-Maize-In BBQ

The new BBQ restaurant opened in February on Maize Road and I finally had the chance to try it out.

One of my friends stopped in to get the food for me. He did note that it was an odd experience. While asking for assistance, one employee was sitting down, glued to the television and didn’t hear the question and appeared to just do that during the visit. The employee probably didn’t even know a customer stopped in the entire time.  One other employee stepped in to help, though.

The order consisted of the brisket, smoked meatloaf, a side of mac and cheese and chips. The mac n cheese was suggested by the employee and the other side appeared to be something added in by default as the option was given to choose another side.

After $34 plus tip, this was our lunch.

This meal was shared between three people at my house.

To keep this as brief as possible, we just didn’t like the meat at all.

The smoked meatloaf was described as glazed to perfection and the glaze had this weird texture as though you could pull it off the meatloaf as if it were one gelatinous piece. One of my friends said the texture of the meatloaf, itself, was off. Our preference for meatloaf is a soft, tender loaf. The one we had from Mo’s A-Maize-N BBQ was tough, dry and had the texture of a stiff burger patty.

This meatloaf didn’t do it for us… at all.

The chips were chips. If given the choice, we definitely would have tried something else. As for the mac n cheese, it was probably the one single bright spot of the meal. We loved the seasoning sprinkled over the top.

Likely the most underwhelming portion of our meal was the brisket. Our half-pound of brisket was dry, overcooked and had this metallic and bitter aftertaste. Everyone winced after the first bite, noting they did not like it. We tried to add some BBQ sauce, but the experience didn’t improve any. Even between the three of us, we couldn’t finish the meal from Mo’s A-Maize-N BBQ.

To say it was a letdown would be an understatement. Between the three attempts with The Barbe-Q Pit and Masters of Barbeque, I’m not sure if the third time was the charm.

Simply put, it was not “amazing”.

But if you are a fan of Mo’s A-Maize-N BBQ, there may be some good news for you if this location is too far northwest. According to the Kickstarter, there’s a soon-to-be southside location on the way.

Here’s the menu:
