On Monday April 1, Wichita celebrated 70 years of the Wichita airport.

Referred to now as the Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport, the airport started on April 1, 1954, when the first commercial air service began service at its present location at 2277 Eisenhower Airport Pkwy. And over the past 70 years, nearly 75 million passengers have been served.

On top of the airport’s 70th birthday, Wichita Dwight D. Eisenhower National Airport was also ranked the Third Best Small Airport from USA Today’s Reader’s Choice Awards.

It’s been quite the busy 2023 for our airport which had its second-busiest year on record with a total of 1,721,990 passengers flying in and out of Wichita Eisenhower National Airport. Thanks in part to record-breaking months of passengers throughout the year.

Excitement also came to the airport, thanks to the announcement of the new nonstop flight to and from Washington D.C.

Safe to say, people are traveling again and a lot of that is taking place in our very own airport.

To celebrate 70 years and the Third Best Small Airport from USA Today, a little cookout was held outside the terminal on Monday afternoon. The team over at All Things Barbecue was on hand to cook hot dogs and burgers from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Hundreds of people were on hand for the complimentary food. Yard games were placed out along the walkway as well as tables and chairs for the passengers of the airport or guests stopping by to say hi and celebrate.

The turnout exceeded expectations and Chef Tom and the rest of the team at All Things Barbecue manned the beautiful Yoder Smokers for the duration of lunch.

I love our airport and the evolution  over the years. It’s convenient, and it’s easy to get in and out of.
