Eddie’s Cafe, a cool little coffee shop with even better people

Eddie's Cafe

A new coffee shop opened over the weekend, taking over the former Carpe Diem space at 8643 W. Central.

This is a place that goes beyond just the coffee. At Eddie’s Cafe, the shop employs people with special needs. It’s a mission that was started by Carpe Diem Cafe and carried on by Eddie’s.

Eddie’s Cafe is named for the owners’ son who you may find at the shop every now and then. When I dropped in and placed my order, they asked me for my name to write on the cup. I said “Eddy” and everybody had a kick out of it, even though I had to make sure my version of the awesome name was spelled with a Y.

I just happened to miss meeting Eddie when I visited during the grand opening day. It would have been cool to meet Eddie and see if I could suggest a spelling change to replace the ie with a y. But that’s all semantics as I was told his real name is Edward, as is mine.

The vibe and attitude of Eddie’s Cafe was wonderful. Everyone was upbeat, engaging, and had a big smile on their face.

I couldn’t leave without ordering something, so I went with the sausage waffle dog and biscuits and gravy. My favorite was the sausage waffle dog which came with a side of syrup. It was a pretty heavenly little snack that made me want to order another one. The sausage gravy on the biscuits were also delicious.

While I’m not a coffee drinker, I felt obligated to order one and the lady at the counter recommended a drink called the Dark Side because it was May 4th when I dropped in. I know nothing about coffee but was told it was made with chocolate and blackberry.

Overall, a very cool mission at Eddie’s Cafe. Go give the team there some love and support.
