First look at Swig: A dirty soda shop in northwest Wichita

It’s almost time for the grand opening of Swig,

Dubbed the “home of the dirty soda”, a date of Friday, May 31 has been set to celebrate their arrival in Wichita at 3080 N. Maize Road.

The chain based out of Utah is currently under a public soft opening. I stopped by when I heard they were open to check it out.

Wichita’s first Swig location had a drive through and an area to order inside. Seating wasn’t available and I’m not sure if there’s a plan to offer any. But the space is limited inside so it may be unlikely. Perhaps some tables and chairs outside of the establishment could be an option during the warmer months.

If you’ve never heard of dirty sodas, the craze, which has gained lots of popularity throughout the country, consists of sodas that are spiked with creams, flavored syrups, and/or fruit. There are endless combinations to build your own or you can order from a preset menu of creations.

There was also a limited menu of snacks including pretzels and cookies.

I ordered the frozen hot chocolate and a strawberry breeze drink along with some pretzel bites. The staff gave me a free frosted sugar cookie due to my wait. I passed on the offer, but they insisted.

Our oldest really enjoyed her frozen hot chocolate. While I’m not positive, I felt like my strawberry breeze drink was made incorrectly. It tasted like coconut water and was missing any strawberry flavor or puree.

The pretzel bites were huge. I’m talking twice the size of what you’ll find at Auntie Annes’s. While I loved the buttery and salty exterior, the size of each bite made for a very bready experience and low butter/salt to bread ratio. I think what I really enjoy about Auntie Anne’s is the size of each bite. It’s perfect. A similar analogy is when you order sushi and each sushi roll is 3-4 times the size of a regular roll and you can’t eat a piece in one bite unless your mouth is the size of Andre the Giant.

It should be noted, this was all during the soft opening. This was the first day I believe of the soft opening and the staff probably has tons of drinks to learn. I don’t think people will be going here strictly for the pretzels as drinks are the name of the game at Swig.

The shop was well staffed and all very nice and positive so that was a major plus as well. It may be time to get familiar with Swig as there’s word multiple locations will be on the way.
