First Look at Chiang Mai Thai Restaurant in Andover

Chiang Mai Thai

One of my favorite restaurants in Wichita recently opened a second location in Andover, KS.

Thai food lovers in east Wichita and Andover can rejoice now that Chiang Mai Thai Restaurant is open at 626 S. Andover Road in the former Sakana Japanese Cuisine space.

I stopped by with my family, and it’s definitely a different look from what you see at their original location at 3141 S. Hillside. It’s certainly more upscale in appearance. But I have to admit, I really appreciate the “dive-y” look of the OG spot.

The vast menu of traditional Thai dishes are also available on the menu at the Andover Chiang Mai Thai location.

We started with a sampler platter for the kids which they made good work of.

My meal, even though it was hot outside, began with the Tom Yum soup with chicken. This includes fresh lemon grass, chili pepper, cilantro, and green onions. It’s pretty much impossible for me to avoid ordering soup at a Thai restaurant. I just love the aroma of Tom Yum. That and the distinct hot and sour flavor it provides. The new Chiang Mai Thai location didn’t miss a beat on the soup.

For my main entrée, I went with the Thai BBQ pork with sticky rice. FYI, if you get this dish, it is a smaller portion size so that’s something to keep in mind. I enjoyed the pork, especially when dipped in the sauce. The sticky rice left I lot to be desired, though. It was darn near crunchy. I get that sticky rice is supposed to be sticky, but even this required some extra oomph to pull it apart. After a bite, I didn’t bother finishing the rest of the sticky rice.

My cousin went with the duck, which is one of my favorite items on the menu at Chiang Mai Thai Restaurant. It had a sweet, yet savory taste and very rich in flavor. I’m not sure exactly what kind of sauce it was swimming in, but whatever it was, that was delicious.

We also ordered some fried rice as a side to share, and that was probably another lowlight for us. It was fairly bland and didn’t do much for us. This made me wonder if Chiang Mai was lacking in the rice department. I can’t say their rice dishes are something I’ve ordered a lot of in the past.

In terms of the soups and the duck, those were big positives for us along with the service. The ambience is something I’m going to have to get used to, simply because I just have a soft spot for the original location.

Regardless, it’s nice to see some more variety offered in the Andover area when it comes to restaurants.

Here’s the menu:

Happy Dining,
Eddy
